The power of a car is, of course, an advantage, but unfortunately it also brings with it negative consequences – excessive loudness when the engine is running. This is often a problem so unpleasant that we even consider changing the car. So what can we do to take care of the proper acoustics of the car and soundproof the car ourselves? Acoustic mats come to the rescue.
Why is it worth soundproofing the car?
Soundproofing the interior of the car significantly improves the comfort of the driver and passengers not only during short trips, but especially during long journeys. When driving on the highway, the main source of noise becomes the rush of air, especially at higher speeds. In addition, tires and other car components make noise, which can be stressful in the long run, especially for young children. Soundproofing a car is also an ideal solution for those who appreciate being able to talk and listen to music while driving. Even the best audio equipment won’t pass the test when the car’s acoustics leave much to be desired. You can mute almost any part of the vehicle, such as the doors. In doing so, we will achieve the effect of their quiet closing – like in the most expensive limousines.
How to soundproof a car? Acoustic mats and their types.
Soundproofing mats are currently the most popular product for soundproofing cars. These are butyl, bitumen or felt mats, usually self-adhesive, available in sheets or whole rolls. They are installed in strategic places under the upholstery, so they do not affect the aesthetic appearance of the car in any way.
Currently, the market offers many types of soundproofing mats. They differ primarily in texture and material. Some of them need additional heating during installation, for example, using a heat gun. By far the cheapest option is mats made of thick felt. However, we do not recommend this solution, because felt absorbs moisture, making it very heavy. Another, slightly better solution is bituminous mats. However, they are not very flexible, and therefore prone to cracking. Both felt and bitumen mats can generate unpleasant odors in the car’s interior, posing a risk of driving discomfort. By far the best way to soundproof a car is to use butyl mats. They are much lighter, flexible and water-resistant. Such mats are extremely effective in blocking noise, as they completely isolate vibrations and oscillations.
How to soundproof a car?
On which elements of the car is it best to apply acoustic mats to get a really satisfactory effect? The basis, of course, is the floor and the bulkhead wall under the underbody. Other places are the doors, the trunk lid (especially if the trunk is not separated from the passenger area), and even the engine compartment. Be sure to choose the right thickness of the mat and select one that will put as little strain on the vehicle as possible. The installation of the mats themselves is not complicated, as long as you choose self-adhesive mats.
